It is the aim of the St Johns County Green Guide to bring a comprehensive guideline to all community residents on the recycling services available to each of us in the city and county. After extensive conversation with officials in both the City of St. Augustine and St. Johns County Solid Waste Departments it was found that less than 25% of our local population recycle. It was agreed that much of that non-participation may well be due to a lack of residents having information and education about how these services work and what they include. Each official spoke of the desire for a program that could indeed offer the ability to recycle more varied items, more extensive types of items and work together to be sure ease and convenience were priority. Indeed both officials eagerly offered to be a part of any educational program or event that could be created to enhance awareness of the existing program and maximize ecological safeguards through recycling as more development takes place. However, in order for such an extensive recycling program to exist, and great futures to develop in these departments there is one key ingredient that is needed and that is YOU. The recycling programs will not expand in our community if they do not receive more abundant participatory support from every household in the county and city. While county residents may find it cumbersome to haul their glass items to a designated location &endash; neighborhood programs can be developed where the drive to make deposits can be rotated among neighbors on a bi-weekly or monthly basis. Many of us had no idea that the city would accept the array of paper publications that they do. Some of us may not have known that there are regular scheduled locations to drop off hazardous waste. And most of us likely have not known that Tillman Ridge Landfill reconditions the paint you bring to dump and re-sells it back to residents for a great price. Let's all take advantage of the free and inexpensive recycling services that are provided to us with real commitment and environmental concern. Once people begin to comply with the programs available to a greater degree we can approach the departments and contracted recyclers about including more extensive types and kinds of items. Increased use of the service warrants requests of the service! Recyling is good for the planet, good for the community and good for you! St Johns County Solid Waste
